XGD3 Beta Dashboards Capable of Reflashing Drives ; Slim Liteon 0272 Firmware Surfaces
Update (4/10/11) : The updates about this are pouring in. C4eva has confirmed that the XGD3 dashboards reflash the Phat Liteon and BenQ drives while the Hitachi drive is ignored for the moment.

A couple of days ago, it was discovered that the new beta dashboards that test the upcoming XGD3 format dummied the DVD key of any drives with a hacked firmware. Now, users are reporting that the dashboards are also capable of fully updating the firmware when it is installed to the Xbox.
Ranger72 from Xbox-Scene reported that a new 0272 firmware has been flashed to drives that were originally manufactured with the 9504 firmware. He also mentions that all the current methods to read the 9504 and 0225 firmwares do not work with the new firmware.

I updated since I don't care for backups, but I will say that it seems like the voice quality was increased once again. Other than that, nothing else of use, except the free copy of Reach, but I already had that anyways.
but does it flash the fat as well or just the slims
time to mod the dash

Hitachi drives will be flashed as well upon final implementation of update no doubt. M$ has clever approach. New format disc which is not available commercially, and "auto" flash drives to newest version at same time. Seems one could simply partition these extra added bits and "tack them on" to circumvent. Perhaps thats a little over simplified, but seems quite possible. Time will tell.
I said this would eventually happen, the DVD firmware flashing. It's like a Trojan horse for those who want the beta that are not part of the program; and get screwed if they put it on a modded console. They have to be able to flash ALL firmware, because older consoles won't be able to read the new format, but newer will read both. This means, there will be a divide line for what games you can play on older modded consoles. If you are not updated, you won't be able to play the new games that come out with the new format. ISO patching won't be an option, unless the game is what the current size is now, or less. Any game that uses the extra GB, won't be able to be patched for older firmware.Since it would be REAL bad PR to make you buy a new console to play new games with this new format; they have to take into consideration, the ability to flash ALL their drives made to date. This brings the Xbox360 into Sony's realm of protection.
i updated to new dash with hitachi 79 flashed with old way it worked do u think i will be banned i have 1.0 on it
So if MS can flash xbox 360s via DVD firmware flashing then hackers should find a way to do so as well I would think.
